VURF recipient Christie Cannarozzi, Senior double major in Comprehensive Science and Criminology, presented at the Villanova University Symposium in September 2017.

On her experience:

“Throughout the summer, Dr. Wade supervised my role as a research assistant at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His research focused on the intersection between childhood poverty, adversity, and well-being. His goal was to translate research on the science of childhood adversity and toxic stress into effective strategies to improve community level systems of care in economically distressed communities. In particular, I helped him with three projects: Impact of Paternal Childhood Adversity on Health Outcomes of Offspring, Family Medical History Project, and Development of a National Youth Firearm Risk and Safety Assessment Tool. Not only did I closely observe the many roles, responsibilities, and simultaneous projects of a clinical researcher, but also learned several techniques to handle qualitative data. For example, I learned the process of a systematic literature review, how to qualitatively code interviews, and conducted youth focus groups. Furthermore, I utilized the research database, REDCap, in order to conduct surveys to participants. In conclusion, this internship addressed my questions regarding qualitative research and helped me determine my career aspirations.”
