About This Issue
There is "something for everyone" in Volume 117, Number 4 of American Catholic Studies.
Patrick Hayes (St. John's University, Staten Island) offers a behind-the-scenes look at one portion of the canonization process in his article, "Jesuit Saint Making: The Case of St. Peter Claver's Cause in Nineteenth-Century America." Hayes examines the American miracles used to promote Claver's cause in Rome, and discusses the role played by promoters such as Francis X. Weninger, SJ, in ensuring that the miracle narratives themselves were found credible by church authorities.
"Catholic Clerical Quandary: The Lawrence Strike of 1912" by James J. Kenneally (Stonehill College) focuses on the role played by clerical and archdiocesan leaders in the Lawrence strike of 1912. Organized by the International Workers of the World (IWW), the strike began when workers discovered their wages had been cut at the same time the workweek for women and children had been reduced from fifty-six to fifty-four hours. Lasting approximately six weeks, the strike impacted over twenty thousand workers, many of them Catholic immigrants.
Maria Mazzenga, Catholic University of America, has contributed an article describing the online American Catholic History Classroom that is being produced by the American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives of CUA. Make sure to visit the website after you read Mazzenga's article. You will be surprised and delighted with what you find.
It is always gratifying when an author's article leads to new information. This was the case when Rodger Van Allen's article, "What Really Happened?: Revisiting the 1965 Exiling to Latin America of Daniel Berrigan, S.J.," appeared in the Summer 2006 issue of ACS. Van Allen received enough new information about the events covered by his essay that we decided to publish a postscript detailing his findings.
