MISSION

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on January 15, 1908 on the Campus on Howard University in Washington D.C.  Lead by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, a group of sixteen women became the original founders of our sorority.  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first Greek-Letter Organization established by and for college educated African American women.  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority received her incorporation on January 29, 1913.  Today their legacy continues as we continue to fulfill their purpose: to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature and to be of Service to All Mankind.

HISTORY

On November 11, 2012, twelve innovative women chartered the Tau Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® on the campus of Villanova University.  These twelve young ladies became the first Divine 9 organization to be solely on Villanova's campus.  Through hard work and the help of their graduate chapter, Phi Beta Omega, these ladies overcame the adversities associated with building a chapter and were able to win 2014 Chapter of the Year only two years after they were chartered. Tau Xi continues to carry on the legacy of our charter members through chapter programs, volunteerism, and sisterhood.
