MINUTES ORGANIZATIONAL Meeting of the Villanova University Senate for Academic Year 2004-2005 in the East Lounge of Dougherty Hall on Thursday, APRIL 29, 2004 at 3:00 P.M.

Since the last meeting of the Senate was April 23, 2004, the timeframe of four business days did not allow the secretary to have the minutes printed and ready for distribution.

"THAT new Agenda items may not be introduced in the Senate after 6:00 P.M.; no Senate debate will take place beyond 6:30 P.M. These rules may be overturned by a majority of those present and voting."

I TEMPORARY CHAIRPERSON
The Temporary Chairperson for today's meeting, Senator Joseph Breslin, 2004-05 Student Body President of Villanova University, called the meeting to order. He requested that Senator Debra Arvanites offer an Invocation for the new Academic Year. 
"O heavenly Father, in Whom we live and move and have our being; we humbly pray to Thee asking Your guidance to govern us as we select representatives to govern and make decisions for the community that we call Villanova University.
We beseech Thee to rule our hearts and the hearts of all others who bear the authority of governance. Help us to remember that we are ever here in Your sight to do Your work on earth. Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen."

Senator Breslin thanked Senator Arvanites for the Invocation
Senator Breslin commented that his administration welcomed the opportunity to work very closely with members of the university administration and they were very excited about that. He introduced the new student Senators to the assembly and asked that each student Senator stand as his/her name was called. Interviews by the Student Government Association will be conducted before appointment of student Senators to the four unfilled seats (2 Arts, 1 Sciences, 1 Engineering).

II ELECTION OF A CHAIRPERSON FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2004-2005
Senator Breslin requested nominations from the floor for the office of 2004-2005 Senate Chairperson. Senator Arvanites nominated:
SENATOR SUSAN MACKEY-KALLIS
Seconded by Senator Jacobs
Senator Bhatti nominated:
SENATOR SOHAIL C. CHAUDHRY
Senator Chaudhry respectfully declined the nomination but thanked Senator Bhatti.
There being no further nominations, Senator Breslin declared nominations closed. Senator Mackey-Kallis was elected as 2004-2005 Chairperson by unanimous vote. Senator Mackey-Kallis took the Chairperson's seat with the congratulations of the Temporary Chairperson and applause of the University Senate.

III ELECTION OF AN EXECUTIVE SECRETARY FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2004-2005
Nominations for an EXECUTIVE SECRETARY were opened. Senator Breslin nominated:
SENATOR REGINA M. DeCRISTOFARO

Seconded by Senator Bhatti
There being no further nominations, Chairperson Mackey-Kallis declared nominations closed and announced Senator DeCristofaro elected by unanimous vote. Congratulations were offered to the 2004-05 Executive Secretary of the Senate.

IV EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ELECTIONS
A. Administrative Members - The following names were put into nomination by Senator McGuire:

SENATOR HELEN K. LAFFERTY (Seconded by Senator Mulroney)
SENATOR JOHN P. STACK, OSA (Seconded by Senator Mulroney)
There being no further nominations, the nominations for administrative members of the Executive Committee were closed. Senators Lafferty and Stack were declared elected to the Executive Committee by unanimous vote. The Chair thanked these members for their willingness to serve.
B. Faculty Members - Senator Arvanites nominated:

Seconded by Senator Chaudhry

Senator Arvanites nominated:
SENATOR SOHAIL C. CHAUDHRY
Seconded by Senator Jacobs
There being no further nominations, the nominations for faculty members of the Executive Committee were closed. Senators Chaudhry and Jacobs were declared elected to the 2004-2005 Executive Committee by unanimous vote. The Chair thanked these members for their willingness to serve.
C. Student Members – Senator Bhatti nominated:

Senator DeCristofaro nominated:
SENATOR SAFEER BHATTI
Seconded by Senator Breslin
There being no further nominations, the nominations for student members of the Executive Committee were closed. Senator Breslin and Senator Park were declared elected to the Executive Committee by unanimous vote. The Chair congratulated the elected student members.
Senator Mulroney, Parliamentarian, requested that the Minutes reflect the fact that all elections of Senate Officers and Executive Committee members were by unanimous vote of those present.

V The MINUTES of the April 23, 2004 meeting were not yet ready for consideration.

VI APPROVAL OF TENTATIVE MEETINGS DATES FOR COMING ACADEMIC YEAR

The planned dates were moved for approval; seconded and approved. The meetings will be scheduled for 3:30 P.M. in the East Lounge of Dougherty Hall, as available.

VII The Operating Rule, US 7879-2-4 was considered by the Villanova University Senate for the coming Academic Year 2004-05:
"That new Agenda items may not be introduced in the Senate after 6:00 P.M.; no Senate debate will take place beyond 6:30 P.M. These rules may be overturned by a majority of those present and voting."
The rule could still be overturned by a majority of those present and voting. There being no objections, the operating rule was adopted for the next academic year by unanimous vote.
There being no further business before the body, a motion was made To Adjourn and seconded. Adjournment took place at 3:18 P.M.
