  5.       RESOLUTION FROM RULES AND REVIEW

Background:  The Senate has traditionally interpreted the term “faculty” in its  Constitution, specifically in Section 2, Article VI concerning the qualifications to serve as a Senator, to refer to full-time tenure or tenure track faculty but not full-time  non-tenure track faculty.  This policy traces back to the inception of the Senate about 40 years ago.  At that time, no non-tenure track faculty member was allowed to work     for more than three consecutive years, and the number of such faculty was small.Currently, the number of full time non-tenure track faculty is much larger (over 15%  of the full time faculty), and dozens of them have served Villanova for more than a  decade.   The University strives to build an inclusive community valuing all its  members which include significant numbers of non-tenure track faculty. Furthermore, the Faculty Congress in its Constitution interprets the term “faculty” to  include full-time non-tenure track faculty who do serve on the Faculty Congress.

MOTION:  The Senate directs the Elections and Credentials Committee of the  Faculty Congress to interpret the term “faculty” in the Senate Constitution to   include otherwise eligible full time non-tenure track faculty members.

 6.   CONGRATULATORY MOTION TO VILLANOVA’S SPORTS TEAMS

The University Senate joins the entire Villanova community in congratulating the  Women's Cross Country Team, coached by Gina Procaccio, and the Men's Football Team, coached by Andy Talley, for winning Villanova's 17th and 18th NCAA  national championships.  You have given us just cause for celebration, and you have  inspired us to emulate your commitment to excellence.
