Please note that you will not be able to utilize all of the features of Villanova's Microsoft Exchange server if you connect to your Villanova mailbox using a third-party email client. Therefore, while you will be able to retrieve the mail in your Inbox (and other folders if using an IMAP connection) using one of these clients, you will not be able to access your other Mail folders, Contacts, Calendar, tasks, etc.
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. IMAP (the latest version is IMAP4) is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. You (or your e-mail client) can view just the heading and the sender of the letter and then decide whether to download the mail. You can also create and manipulate folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, or search for certain parts or an entire note. IMAP requires continual access to the server during the time that you are working with your mail.
When you connect to your mailbox using an IMAP connection, messages deleted on your machine will also be removed from the server.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. Periodically, you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box on the server and download any mail.
It is important to understand that a POP3 connection, by default, will download a local copy of your email to your mail client and will then remove that email from the server, unless you tell the mail client to "Leave a copy on the server."
