Windows Updates Process Changes

In March, the University will begin deploying monthly critical software updates for Villanova Windows computers through a new automated process.  This University Information Technology Committee (UCIT) approved policy and process change is a part of the ongoing IT Security initiatives focused on protecting University systems, data, network and faculty, staff, student and alumni information.   This new process will automatically install monthly Windows updates from Microsoft to Villanova computers. Benefits of deploying Windows Updates:

  • Mitigate security vulnerabilities and provide bug fixes
  • Prevent viruses and malware
  • Software and operating systems improvements
  • Improve overall system’s performance

More information about deploying Windows Updates to campus, can be found at: http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/unit/employee_services/WindowsUpdates.html

Biology Interactive Lab

UNIT, working with Villanova’s CLAS IT and Dr. Phil Stephens partnered to leverage new multimedia technology and develop a seamless classroom experience. Utilizing a Multi Display system that can control, present and communicate with 5 distinct classroom “Learning Pods” the team has created a fluid and customizable learning experience. Each Pod is equipped with its own 55” display that allows students back and forth interaction with the instructor from the Pod.

When using this technology Dr. Stephens’ can collaborate with the students, manipulating documents, images or other learning materials through an iPad or laptop then choose to either duplicate the information across all screens or spread it out to individual displays. Using a built in moderator mode, students can share their information across all Pod displays as well or drop information into a specific pod across the classroom. The collaboration team of UNIT, CLAS IT and Dr. Phil Stevens successfully integrated complementary Audio Video systems and Software vendors to make a fully customized learning environment.

Internet Router Upgrade

UNIT wants you to get the most out of your data!  To ensure continuous access, higher network performance, and reliability, UNIT has recently replaced the University’s Internet router. By upgrading network speed to 10 Gigabit links, to and from the Internet, University students, faculty, and staff will experience an improved network quality of service, especially with applications using the “cloud.”

This upgrade also offers a broader set of “next generation” IT security improvements, and its routing engine integrates more intelligently with the University’s layered security strategy.

IT Security: Phishing

Villanova, as well as other universities, are seeing a marked increase in both the number and sophistication of Phishing campaigns.  UNIT is actively taking steps to reduce the impact of future phishing campaigns/attempts through a variety of technical measures and continued user awareness.  In light of these recent phishing attempts both locally and at Villanova, UNIT has added the following site to greater enhance the visibility of known phishing campaigns that may have impacted our community and provide more information about Phishing and how to report it. http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/unit/security/PhishingAwareness.html
