| High School to College: Transitional Tips |
- Roommates: Never assume anything
about your roommate’s situation. Communication is key. A single roommate can
live by his or her own schedule and be as messy and loud as they want. But,
roommates can become close friends and be good listeners when you need to vent.
- Eating: College cafeterias =
buffet lines = “Freshman Fifteen”. It’s not so much that the food is good;
rather eating becomes a social situation where you end up eating longer and
more.
- Classes: Take classes that
interest you outside of your major. Don’t blow your classes off, but don’t take
them so seriously your forget about everything else going on out there.
- Extracurricular: Take advantage
of social/service organizations or clubs you might be interested in. Not only is
it a great way to make new friends, but also a great resume builder.
- Friends: The most important
aspect of college is the relationships you will make. If you appear friendly and
approachable, people are more likely to respond positively. Be open minded. You
will meet many interesting people and build relationship that will last a
lifetime.
- Contact the Career Center: Take
inventories early to evaluate your interests, skills, talents and strengths. It
will help guide you in your career and major choice.
- Time Management: This is crucial
in making a successful transition. Use your time effectively to study, exercise,
make friends, plan out the day, go over notes and try new things.
- Making the Grade: Responsibility
of learning rests on you. Form study groups. Read all the material. Use the
library. Ask your mentor and advisor for advice. Talk with professors.
- Learning Style: Match your
learning style with a teaching style. It makes learning easier.
- Emotional Adjustment: Get enough
sleep. Stay on top of your studies. Don’t worry about grades. Get help when you
need it. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Don’t be shy. If you are homesick keep
yourself busy and make new friends.
- Professionalism: Be patient,
relaxed and focused when dealing with school related people and situations.
- Explore the Campus: Go into
other buildings other than where classes are held. Become comfortable with the
campus like it’s your new home.
- Professors: Be visible. Sit up
from to stay awake and to be remembered=brownie points.
- Sleep: Get enough sleep and
don’t stay up/out to late on the weekends.

- First aid kit with decongestant, cough suppressant, cough drops and
aspirin.
