About the Programs

Foundations in Project Management is an in-depth, four-day introduction to the principles of project management as described in PMI's® Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) 3rd Edition. Designed for those who are new to the discipline, this course will acquaint you with updated principles and current practices in project management. Taught by nationally certified, working practitioners, Foundations lays a strong knowledge base that enables you to return to the workplace and practice what you have learned. Many find this course helpful to prepare studying for the PMP® credential examination.

The Prep for PMP® Credential Class in an intense, two day, preparation study course. It is intended for candidates who are experienced in project management, and have taken courses such as PMI®-DVC's "Foundations in Project Management." The Five Process Groups of Project Management Project Management Body of Knowledge

These are the stages a project manager actually gets through before completion of the plan. Both courses marry the theory and the practice of the project management into an integrated whole, based on the process areas as described below:

  • Initiating. Covers project selection, project manager identification, project charter and determining realistic project goals, constraints, and assumptions at the outset.
  • Planning. Emphasizes the planning, scheduling, budgeting, and other skills necessary to properly establish a project at the very beginning.
  • Executing. The importance of monitoring the project as it progresses, and setting up feedback processes which measure actual progress against the baseline.
  • Controlling. Measuring and establishing project performance early enough to make appropriate adjustments. Performance reporting, configuration management, and change control.
  • Closing. Finalizing the need of a phrase or a project. Closing contracts and project acceptance and termination.

Both courses offer the core nine knowledge areas, key to the successful planning and implementation of a project. These knowledge areas integrate closely with the five process areas to guide you through the project:

  • Integration Management.  The various elements of the project must be properly coordinated. Learn how to use the development and execution of a project plan with integrated change control to tie together the entire project.
  • Scope Management.  Effective scope management is a vital discipline for achieving project objectives. Learn about conceptual development, the scope statement, work authorization, scope reporting, and control systems throughout the project life cycle.
  • Contract Management.  Project managers use oral and written contracts to achieve project objectives. Find out about contract objectives and type, the acquisition process, contract administration, and post-contract evaluations.
  • Time Management.  Many projects and project managers do not actively manage a project's most precious resource: time. Acquire techniques for planning, estimating, scheduling, and controlling time.
  • Communications Management.  Every project management activity involves communication. Discover the importance of identifying the audience, the communication process, communication skills, the environment, and the application of communication management.
  • Cost Management.  The bottom line is often the sole determinant of project success or failure. Focus on estimating, forecasting, budgeting, and controlling costs as well as the application of cost report information.
  • Human Resource Management.  As a project manager, you are responsible for building a cohesive project team from a group of individual specialists. Human resource management skills are needed to make this transformation. Learn about the administrative and behavioral aspects of human resource management unique to project management.
  • Risk Management.  Every project activity affects every other project activity. The project manager needs to know the probability of success or failure for certain events, and how each outcome changes the rest of the project. Concentrate on identifying, evaluating and mitigating risk.
  • Quality Management.  Today more than ever, a project manager needs to be sensitive to client expectations. Learn about quality assurance, quality control and the quality management plan.

These courses will be taught by certified Project Management Professionals (PMPs®). You will learn from practicing project managers, active members of the Delaware Valley chapter of the Project Management Institute. These professionals will teach you the same concepts, tools, and techniques that they apply to their own projects. Their practical, personal insights into how projects are managed in the real world will enhance your present job skills or prepare you  to earn your PMP®.
