Villanova University values its retired faculty members and encourages
them to maintain their contact with the university. Retired faculty members
are invited to continue to use their Villanova E-mail account, and retired
faculty members receive all of the broadcast E-mail messages directed to
faculty. Retired faculty members retain their access to the Library. Retired
faculty members are also cordially invited to the many public University
events and ceremonies. Retired faculty members are encouraged to process
with the faculty at formal Academic Convocations, such as St. Thomas of
Villanova Day, Graduation, and Baccalaureate. A retired faculty member also
sits on the Faculty Congress. For specific questions about benefits for
retired faculty members, please contact Human
Resources (610 519-4239). For other questions about the rights and
privileges of retired faculty members, please contact the Academic Affairs
Office (610 519 4520).
Villanova's Quarterly Club
Villanova's Quarterly Club enables faculty who have retired to continue
their association with the University and with one another. It sponsors four
on-campus luncheons each academic year (with a social hour and a speaker), a
memorial mass each fall, and two off campus events each year. It also aims
to promote the welfare and concerns of its members
and to render any service that it can to the
university. The Quarterly Club also nominates the
retiree who sits as a member of the Faculty
Congress. All retired faculty are invited to join the Quarterly Club. Membership dues are $15.00 per year. For further
information, please contact
Ray Cummings, Secretary/Treasurer, or the Academic Affairs Office.
Emeritus Status
The
Faculty Handbook includes the criteria and process for conferring Emeritus Status on
a retired faculty member, which are as
follows:
The honor of emeritus status may be conferred upon faculty who ended
their Villanova careers at the rank of professor or associate professor, who
served at least fifteen years at Villanova prior to retirement or departure,
and whose academic career or service to the University was genuinely
distinguished. Except for direct presidential action, initial
recommendations for the conferral of emeritus status may be made by any
tenured Villanova faculty member by submitting a curriculum vitae and
nominating letter to the current chair of the nominee's department. Such
recommendations normally must be made within three years of the faculty
member's departure. Recommendations are reviewed by the departmental Rank
and Tenure Committee, whose membership for such cases includes all faculty
at or above the rank to which the emeritus designation is to be assigned.
Consideration at the department committee level is based upon the
candidate's curriculum vitae, the nominating letter, and the committee's
general knowledge of the candidate's career. Senior department faculty who
serve on the College or University Rank and Tenure Committees participate in
the department committee's deliberations but may not vote. The department
rank and tenure committee forwards to the department chair the candidate's
curriculum vitae, the nominating letter, and a brief but informative report
on and explanation of the committee's recommendation.
The chair forwards the report, along with his/her own evaluation letter,
to the dean, who makes the materials available to the college rank and
tenure committee. The committee votes by secret ballot on the recommendation
and sends its written report to the dean. After adding his/her
recommendation, the dean forwards the dossier and recommendations to the
VPAA, who presents the case to the University Rank and Tenure Committee,
which, following standard procedure, recommends to the President.
