For students interested in improving their fluency level in another language, immersion in that language is essential. Villanova University recognizes this importance and sponsors four language and literature summer programs that provide students with an opportunity to integrate into another culture and improve their foreign language proficiency.

This 6-week program is designed for students who wish to increase their proficiency
in Spanish and to be introduced to Spanish literature, culture and civilization.
Course Offerings
Students choose a combination of the following courses for a total of 6 credits:
SPA 1121/1122 Intermediate Spanish I & II - 6 credits
Intensive practice of grammar, composition, reading, and conversation.
SPA 1131/1132 Spanish Conversation & Composition - 6 credits
Intensive practice in conversation and composition with emphasis on developing advanced
Spanish language skills.
SPA 2211 Survey of Peninsular Literature - 3 credits
The foremost works of Spanish literature from the beginning to present day.
SPA 2142 Spanish Civilization - 3 credits
Civilization and culture of Spain.

Housing and Meals
In Madrid, students are housed in a hotel and breakfast and dinner are normally
taken in the hotel restaurant. In Cádiz, students are housed in single or double
rooms with Spanish families throughout Cádiz. Students receive full board and laundry service while with the families.
Excursions
The Cursos de Verano organizes several excursions to various locations throughout
southern Spain. Villanova University organizes trips to Seville and Granada, a visit
to Cordoba and, while in Madrid, two 1-day field trips to Toledo and Segovia. Visits
to the Prado and other Madrid historic sites are also planned.
Itinerary-Summer 2010
The program begins with three days of tours of Madrid and the
surrounding cities of Toledo and Segovia. Students then travel to Cádiz, with a
tour of Córdoba on the way and before beginning the five weeks of intensive
Spanish grammar, or conversation and composition, literature, and civilization
and culture courses.

The purpose of this 6 week, program is to develop students' proficiency in the German language and to introduce the student to German culture, , philosophy and literature. The students will have the option of taking a philosophy/theology seminar, titled “Faith, Love and Knowledge in Tübingen.” Students will live and study in the charming medieval town of Tübingen, beautifully situated on the Neckar River in the rural foothills of the Swabian Alb and visit various historical and natural sites in the area.
Course Offerings
Students have the option of pursuing German language for the full six weeks, or for only four weeks, followed by a Philosophy/Theology seminar for two weeks. The course offerings available are the following:

Housing and Meals
Students will be housed with families in and around Tübingen. During the weekdays, students will eat breakfast and lunch with host families, and on the weekends, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided by the host families.
Excursions
The program will also have weekend excursions in Tübingen and the surrounding
area. Possible excursions include visiting the Bosch headquarters and the
Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, as well as the Wurmlingen Chapel and
significant historical sights and art museums.

Rennes & Paris, France. Students take courses at the Centre
International Rennais d'études de français pour étrangers (CIREFE) of Université
Rennes 2 - Haute Bretagne, and instruction is coordinated and overseen by the Villanova
faculty member in residence.
Rennes: Capital of la Bretagne, Rennes is a city of approximately 275,000
people and an additional 60,000 university students. With its numerous cultural
activities, low cost of living, large weekly open-air market, and new subway line,
Rennes regularly ranks as one of the most desirable cities in which to live and
work in France. It is just two hours west of Paris by TGV.
Université Rennes 2: About 60,000 students and 3,500 researchers have
found their temporary home in the city's two universities and twenty other institutions
of higher education. Successful programs in French language, culture, and literature
have been offered at the Université Rennes 2 - Haute Bretagne since the Faculté
des Lettres was established in Rennes in 1810.

Program
This six-credit program provides participants with a unique opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of French language and culture. The program
is divided into two distinct components: intensive coursework emphasizing language and civilization at all levels, as well as literature, writing, and French culture;
and cultural analysis highlighting the French way of life from both socio-cultural and linguistic perspectives.
Course Offerings
Students choose two of the following three-credit courses (one course from FRE 1136 and FRE 1137, and FRE 2143) :
REMINDER: Courses above the 1122 level count toward a minor or major in French at Villanova.
FRE 1136: Contemporary French Language 1
Provides practice in speaking and writing; more difficult than advanced intermediate courses. Emphasis on the use of French in everyday situations and
subject-related discussions.
FRE 1137: Contemporary French Language 2
(Similar to FRE 1136 in topics and goals) This course is for students who are more advanced in French upon arrival in France and who are placed into upper levels for
coursework at Université Rennes 2 – Haute Bretagne.Providesractice in speaking and writing; more difficult than advanced intermediate courses. Emphasis on the use of
French in everyday situations and subject-related discussions.
FRE 2143: Contemporary France
Focuses on regional identities and other aspects from current French headlines. Oral presentation and independent research are required.

Housing and Meals
While in Rennes, students will live with host families, with easy access to the
university campus via public transportation. The university has a metro stop right
on campus (Villejean-Université) and is just a five-minute subway ride away from
the center of Rennes, which offers everything from fast food to fine dining. In
addition to breakfast and dinner with their host families, students can take well
- balanced meals at the restaurant universitaire, or Resto-U, on campus. There is
also a canteen located next to the classroom building.
In Paris, students share rooms at the Maison internationale de la jeunesse et
des étudiants (MIJE), a youth hostel situated in
the center of the city. Breakfasts and some meals are also provided in Paris.
Excursions
Students will participate in the excursions organized through the CIREFE to le Mont St. Michel and to the forest of Brocéliande. There will also be a weekend trip
to St. Malo, a walled city on the English Channel, marking the transition between Rennes and Paris.

This program, conducted in both Urbino and Florence, is designed to give students
the opportunity to learn and/or improve their Italian language skills and expose
them to Italian culture and civilization both in and out of the classroom. Students
will profit from the ideal location of the two cities: Urbino, high in the beautiful
Apennines yet close to the Adriatic beaches; Florence, centrally located and only
a few hours by rail from important centers to the north and south.

Housing and Meals
Students will reside in university dorms while in Urbino, in private, air-conditioned
apartments while in Florence, and in hotels in Rome, Sorrento and Venice. Meals
will be provided in Urbino, Rome, and during the weekend excursions. In Florence,
cooking facilities are provided so students may prepare simple meals in their apartments.
Excursions
As part of their regular itinerary, students will visit Rome, Assisi, Perugia,
Venice, Ravenna, Sorrento, Capri and other places of interest. During their stay
in Florence, students will be able to visit Siena, San Gimignano, Fiesole, Pisa,
Montecatini, and other towns in Tuscany and throughout Italy.
Transportation
The group will fly either from Philadelphia to Rome or from Newark to Rome and be transferred to Urbino by bus. All surface transfers in Italy will occur by private, air-conditioned busses from the point of arrival in Italy to the point of departure for the United States.
Flight Arrangements are made directly by the students through a travel agent designated by Villanova University. Personal flight arrangements can be made, provided that students arrive in Urbino by the first day of classes.
