Scholarships and Other Funding

This page contains many useful scholarship links for specific countries, program providers, and organizations around the world. Also included are scholarships offered through Villanova University, and search engines that are all available to you on this page. Please note that this list of funding is by no means complete.

There exists an immense amount of resources available to those that voluntarily seek them. We ask that if you do receive financial aid, grants, scholarships or loans to please contact the Office of Financial Assistance: (610) 519-6456.

Additionally, the Center for Research and Fellowships will assist students as they prepare funding applications for such awards as Gilman, Boren, and CLS. Within this page is an excellent list of scholarship opportunities for study abroad and beyond! CRF is a wonderful and worthwhile site to explore and also a great office to visit! The Center for Research and Fellowship is located in Garey Hall.

Villanova Scholarships for Study Abroad and International Experiences

 

Scholarships are available through the Office of Education Abroad, the VSB Moran Center for Global Leadership, and the Center for Irish Studies are all found in the link below. Students must apply to each scholarship by the individual stated deadlines. 

 

Villanova Program Specific Scholarships

Some Villanova Scholarships are only available to applicants who participate in specific programs. In these cases, the scholarship questionnaire appears in the individual program application in Passport Villanova. If students are interested in applying for the program specific scholarship, they must complete the scholarship questionnaire along with the rest of the program application. 

Joseph Patrick Hooker Experiential Learning Fund Award
Open to first-year students only for the Learning Communities Abroad in Dublin program.  Founded in memory of Villanova alumni, Joe Hooker, by his fraternity brothers.  Preference given to Irish Studies minors or majors, students with financial need. Awards of $500-$1000.

Linn Scholarship - Open to participants in the Villanova Prague Summer Program.

Patriarch Scholarship - Open to Italian majors and minors who spend the summer abroad studying on specific language focused programs. Awards up to full program tuition. 

The Nicholas Martini Foundation Endowed Study Abroad Fund - Open to participants in the Villanova Summer Economics and Culture of Italy Program.

Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Scholarship- Open to participants in the Villanova Intensive Course Abroad: European Innovation Academy Program. 

  • Frank Huntington Beebe Fellowship: The purpose of the Fund is to provide fellowships for gifted young musicians, generally performers and composers in classical disciplines, who wish to pursue advanced music study and performance abroad, usually in Europe.
  • Gilman International Scholarships: Provides up to $5000 for study abroad in any nation. Priority given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants.

  • Institute of International Education: Sorts scholarship money by study abroad location.
  • Institute for International Public Policy: Undergraduate funding for study abroad summer institute, language immersion programs, and internships. Money for master's study of international affairs available as well. Open to sophomore under-represented students with a GPA of at least 3.2.
  • National Italian American Foundation Scholarship
  • NSEP-National Security Education Program is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and enhance international cooperation and security. NSEP awards will range from full scholarships (covering tuition and other program costs, round-trip airfare on a U.S. flag carrier, health insurance, and local transportation) to awards of up to $8,000 for summer, $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for an academic year.   • Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships: Various scholarships for foreign study and foreign travel. The three major scholarships programs are: 1) full funding for academic year abroad, 2) full funding for 2-3 year degree programs abroad, and 3) full funding for foreign language study abroad.
  • Fund for Education Abroad: FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. Deadline is January 18, 2016 - up to $10,000 awarded!
  • Diversity Abroad:  Applicants must be full-time undergraduates at a university or community college based in the United States. Students must participate in a study abroad program offered by a DiversityAbroad.com partner organization. Economically disadvantaged students, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino, Multiracial/ethnic or Native-American undergraduate students as well as student who study in non traditional locations (Outside western Europe & Australia ) are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • USA Study Abroad: Are you pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree? Interested in research? Enhance your education by studying abroad. You can learn how to communicate across cultures and work with diverse teams while working toward your degree. Find a program that’s right for you.
  • Arcadia Abroad: Arcadia Abroad has one of the most extensive scholarship programs of any study abroad organization. Every year Arcadia distributes hundreds of need-based scholarships ranging between $500 and $2,000 for a full-year, semester or term.
  • Boston University:  Boston University International Programs is committed to helping make a summer, semester, or year abroad possible. Apply now!
  • Institute for Study Abroad: IFSA offers scholarships and travel grants to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • CIEE-Council on International Educational Experiences Scholarships: For many students, a study abroad experience is only possible with financial assistance. Each year CIEE awards scholarships and grants to students who plan to study overseas. Full details of the five different scholarships can be found are described within this link. Please read the eligibility criteria and the application procedures for each scholarship carefully.
  • DIS - Study Abroad in Scandinavia: The DIS Board has allocated scholarship funds for students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark and Sweden. 
  • IES - Institute for the International Education of Students: IES believes that financial limitations should not prevent a student from participating in an IES program. For this reason, each year IES commits over $2.15 million to its financial aid programs for students attending IES programs.
  • SIT - School for International Training: About one-third of those who seek scholarships from SIT Study Abroad receive financial assistance to participate in SIT's programs. Awards are made on consideration of both merit and need.
  • FIE Study Abroad Sharif Rahman Semester and Quarter Scholarship  The Scholarship for FIE Semester Programs is a unique way to enrich your study abroad program with FIE, not only monetarily, but also by providing you with a platform to have a voice and active involvement in social values shared by your university and FIE.  Students have the choice between three application routes, each offering a scholarship worth $3000 as well as various additional benefits.
  • FIE Study Abroad: FIE believes in opening study abroad opportunities for all students through scholarships.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship - The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

SIT Pell Grant Match Scholarship - SIT Study Abroad is committed to making its study abroad programs affordable for a diversity of students, including low-income undergraduates who might otherwise not pursue international opportunities. Our Pell Grant Match program provides matching grants to students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding for the term during which they are studying with SIT. This award can be applied to any SIT program.

CIEE Need Based Grants - The Gain Travel Grant is 750-2000 dollars towards airfare for students who show financial need. Pell-eligible students who apply by October 15 for Jan/Spring programs and April 1 for Fall programs are guaranteed to receive the grant.

  • Funding and Scholarships, Learning Abroad Center, University of Minnesota: Funding for U of MN students as well as non-U of MN students.
  • The Financial Aid Page: One of the first web-based guides to finding scholarships and understanding U.S. federal financial aid, it even has a section that lists scholarships for study abroad. Within the page is also a great guide for warning students about scams, giving advice about how to apply for scholarships, etc...
  • International Education Financial Aid: A search engine for many types of scholarships and fellowships at all educational levels, worldwide, for all types of study.
  • HispanicScholarship.com: Sponsored by Daimler-Chrysler, which lists hundreds of scholarships, grants and other financial aid sources targeting Latino students.
  • FastWeb: Has free searches. No fee charged, but students must "register" with the web service.
  • StudentAwards.com: Scholarships for U.S. and Canadian students, includes a free search feature but requires registration
