Inauguration of the Villanova Center for Liberal Education
April 16, 2007:
It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to the inauguration of the
Villanova Center for Liberal Education. I would especially like to extend a warm
welcome to our distinguished guest, Dr. Charles Dougherty, President of Duquesne
University, as well as to all of you here, Fr. Peter, Vice Presidents, Deans and
faculty, and students. This is great day for our College and for the University.
Some fifteen years ago, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences took a great
risk in establishing what was then called the Core Humanities Program: a two
semester seminar that had as it theme the study of Augustine and the Great
Books. It was a risk because we didn’t know if we could staff such a program or
even if we could afford to offer it. Yet, with the support of Fr. Lawrence
Gallen, who was then Vice President for Academic Affairs, we launched this
program, which now includes all first year Villanova students, and which
introduces them to the humanities and the life of the mind.

enhance the participation of all Villanova — the student body, our own Institute
faculty, and faculty in other departments — in the intellectual life central to
an Augustinian university. (read more)
