I work on the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Many of our patients and families had already been practicing measures of social distancing prior to COVID-19. Since their children require some treatments that affect the immune system, these families have learned to avoid sick friends or family, stray from large crowds or have their child wear a mask in public. With the onset of COVID-19, both our oncology clinical team and families have had to further enhance these precautions. Despite the many fears and changes that have come with COVID-19, our care goal remains the same: to do our very best to protect the health and safety of our patients.

These children are still fighting cancer. Although COVID-19 has halted much of the world, my work as a nurse in the pediatric oncology unit continues. I have witnessed my team of nurses unite in the support of our patients, as well as in support of all health care providers stepping up in the face in COVID-19.

Despite the challenges of the current time, I will continue to proudly care for my patients and help them face both pediatric cancer and COVID-19 as their nurse.
