PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology majors should begin study abroad planning early to ensure it fits within the four-year curriculum. Students who set a target semester by the end of their first year and discuss it with their academic advisor are more likely to avoid complications with major requirements.
Meet with your PBS advisor as early as possible to express your interest. They will help determine the best term to go abroad and guide your course planning to meet prerequisites and sequencing needs.
Specific things to consider:
- Plan ahead for junior or (approved) senior year abroad.
- For PSY-BS and CBN majors, early planning is essential for sophomore-year study abroad.
- PSY 2100 is only offered fall semester and should be taken as early as possible, preferably during the sophomore year. Students considering going abroad fall sophomore, junior or senior year (with approval) must plan accordingly.
- Cannot be taken abroad: PSY 2050, PSY 2100, PSY 4200, PSY 4500, PSY 5150, PSY 5250, CBN 5000, Capstone Courses.
- A max of 2 PSY/CBN courses may be taken during a study abroad experience and count towards the major or minor.
- No more than 12 total credits (4 courses) that have a PSY designation or PSY attribute and have a "T" grade will be accepted in transfer from outside of Villanova (not just including study abroad). Students with more than 12 transfer credits in PSY/ PSY attributes will have additional courses fall to electives in their Degree Works audits.
Search the OEA Course Approval History database to select from more than 3,000 study abroad courses that have already been pre-approved for liberal education requirements and a growing list of technical courses.
The Course Approval History database is not exhaustive and students can work with an OEA advisor to submit additional courses for review.
Don't forget - CLAS has a list of policies and limitations specifically focused on study abroad. Make sure you're aware of these as you plan your overseas experience.

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a Villanova or program application deadlines.
There are many study abroad scholarships available for students through Villanova University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
Browse the scholarship opportunities found on the OEA website.
