A PAPAL CONNECTION
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, OSA, '77 CLAS, was elected the 267th pope. Now known to the world as Pope Leo XIV, he is not only the first pope from the United States, but also a fellow Augustinian and Villanovan. Across the University, our institutes, centers, programs and scholars are contributing meaningfully to conversations about Pope Leo XIV, the papacy and the future of the Catholic Church.

Villanova University and its Office for Sustainability will host the 2026 International Sustainability Conference entitled Responding to the Cries of the Earth and the Poor, from October 12–16, 2026, in Rome, Italy. The Conference will bring together academics, researchers, Church representatives, foundations, and public and private sector leaders in a transdisciplinary forum designed to move from dialogue to concrete, collaborative action.
Pope Leo XIV Releases First Encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas”
On May 25, 2026, Pope Leo XIV released his first papal encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” The letter—true to its title’s meaning of “magnificent humanity”—addresses how society, collectively, must preserve human virtues in a time of rapid technological advancement. Villanova University scholars weighed in on the Pontiff's milestone document.
Latin American Studies Professor Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award
Raúl Diego Rivera Hernández, PhD, director of the Latin American Studies program and associate professor in the Department of Spanish at Villanova University, has been awarded a prestigious 2026-2027 Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Bret Myers, PhD, a sports business expert and professor of the practice of Management and Operations at Villanova University, is looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A former consultant to Major League Soccer clubs, Myers recently shared his insights on the tournament’s popularity in the U.S., its economic and cultural impact and what fans can expect when the world’s top teams take the pitch.
