New Graduate Certificate Prepares Coaches for On- and Off- Field Leadership
The 15-credit Certificate in Athletic Coaching in the Department of Education and Counseling serves the learning goals of current and aspiring middle school, high school and collegiate coaches.
For many coaches, the journey begins with a whistle and a deep love for teaching the game, but with little formal preparation for the complex role. Villanova University’s Department of Education and Counseling has introduced a new Certificate in Athletic Coaching, a 15-credit graduate program designed to prepare current and aspiring coaches to lead with purpose, integrity and impact.
The certificate, which can be completed as a stand-alone credential or in combination with a Master of Arts in Education is designed to serve individuals interested in coaching at the middle school, high school or collegiate level, as well as those already serving in coaching or athletic leadership roles.
“This certificate program responds to a growing need within both school-based and community athletics,” said Jerusha Conner, PhD, professor of education and director of the graduate program in Education and its Teacher Leadership concentration.
“Many coaches enter the field drawing primarily on their own experiences as athletes, without formal training in pedagogy, leadership or youth development,” Dr. Conner said.
The certificate is designed to bridge that gap, offering a more intentional and research-informed approach to coaching. Its flexible structure—requiring five total courses—is positioned to attract educators, referees, athletic administrators and community members involved in youth sports. It’s also expected to appeal to Villanova student-athletes, particularly those in their fifth year of eligibility who are pursuing graduate study while preparing for future careers in coaching.
It allows candidates to combine the certificate with other graduate programs or credentials, supporting interdisciplinary study and career advancement.
The curriculum includes courses in adolescent or college student development, educational leadership or philosophy, and specialized topics such as Sports and Education and Coaching Athletes with Character and Ethics. A required internship or practicum ensures that students gain hands-on experience applying what they learn in real-world settings.
Rooted in Villanova’s Augustinian values, the graduate certificate program highlights the role of athletics in promoting teamwork, ethical leadership and community engagement. By preparing coaches to lead with both competence and compassion, the certificate aims to strengthen athletic programs while contributing to the holistic development of the individuals and communities they serve.
