Every year, the Italian Studies program presents a themed lecture series open to student, faculty, staff, alumni and the wider community. The series is generously supported by the Richard and Mary Anne Francisco Endowed Fund.

Should we read works of literature in translation? How does one negotiate cultural interactions across languages?

The lecture by Simone Marchesi, PhD, Professor of French and Italian at Princeton University, will address the intellectual trajectory of Dante Alighieri, often called "the father of Italian language," to show how monolingualism and fear of loss in translation are purely modern concerns, not only alien to Dante’s culture, but also at the basis of dangerously identitarian political discourses.
