Villanova Mourns a Legendary Alumnus

George Raveling ’60 VSB, Villanova Basketball legend and Hall of Fame coach, passed away on Sept. 1, 2025, at the age of 89.

Raveling was a standout player for the Wildcats from 1957 to 1960 and returned to Villanova as an assistant to Head Coach Jack Kraft. It was the first stop in a coaching career that took him to Washington State, Iowa and the University of Southern California and culminated with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. The following year, he received an honorary degree from Villanova.

Raveling’s legacy at Villanova extends beyond Athletics. During 1963’s March on Washington, Raveling was working as event security on stage during the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream,” and Dr. King handed Raveling a copy of the address shortly after delivering it. In 2021, Raveling chose Villanova to be the next steward of the speech, and the University has collaborated with the Smithsonian and the National Museum of African American History and Culture on a long-term “on-loan” arrangement to ensure broad access to Dr. King’s message.

"George Raveling was a Villanovan in the truest sense of the word. He left a significant mark on Villanova University and the sport of basketball,” says University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS. “He broke down racial barriers as a coach and became a well-respected and admired figure amongst his professional and personal peers. He will be missed.”
