Lifetime achievement award from Philadelphia nonprofit honors vision and leadership of Villanova’s President
For nearly 20 years, Villanovans have seen firsthand the transformative impact of University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS. Now, the city of Philadelphia is recognizing how his vision, dedication and energy have helped strengthen not just the University but also the city's status as a global leader. That recognition came in the form of the 2025 Globy Award for Lifetime Achievement, presented by the Global Philadelphia Association at its 11th annual ceremony.
Global Philadelphia is a nonprofit that promotes Philadelphia as a hub of global connections. Established in 2015, the Globy Awards honor individuals and organizations that exemplify Philadelphia’s worldwide influence and leadership.
In announcing Father Peter’s selection for the award, the organization called him “a champion of sustainability and service (who) has fostered a culture of academic excellence and global citizenship that continues to define Villanova today.”
Since becoming President in 2006, Father Peter has overseen a period of unprecedented growth and achievement for the University. He has launched two ambitious strategic plans, which have advanced academic innovation, expanded student opportunities and strengthened Villanova’s reputation as the premier Augustinian Catholic university.
Hallmarks of his tenure include enhancements to the academic life of the University; a campus transformation that has upgraded and expanded academic, residential, athletic and community spaces; an emphasis on service, including the launch of the annual St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service; and a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship.
The award ceremony emphasized the shared values of Global Philadelphia and the event’s honorees, taking place at the Ballroom at the Ben in Center City to celebrate the city’s history. Jay Wright, Villanova’s Hall of Fame former Men’s Basketball coach and now a special assistant to the President, introduced Father Peter–a fitting connection for someone who credits his achievements to close collaborations with colleagues who have become friends.
“I’m grateful to Global Philadelphia for this award, which is really a recognition of the team of dedicated leaders who have helped bring this vision for Villanova to life,” says Father Peter. “What we have achieved together brings me immense pride and joy.”
