Mourning an Academic Leader and Scholar

The Rev. Kail C. Ellis, OSA, PhD, ’69 MA, whose visionary leadership over more than 50 years helped to shape the academic experience for generations of Villanovans, died on Dec. 20, 2025, at the age of 85.

Father Ellis served for 25 years as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and later as vice president for Academic Affairs. He was a steadfast champion of the liberal arts, and his vision led to the development of the Augustine and Culture Seminar, a hallmark of the undergraduate experience for the past 30 years.

A scholar of the Middle East, Father Ellis founded the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies in 1983. He also revitalized the Mendel Medal, which has been bestowed by the University upon outstanding scientists, including Nobel laureates, who demonstrate that faith and scientific inquiry are not in conflict.

In CLAS, Father Ellis’ name is connected to entities that reflect his passionate advocacy for students and commitment to Augustinian values: the Rev. Kail C. Ellis, OSA, Center for Undergraduate Students, which houses programs and resources that help students succeed and thrive, and the Rev. Kail C. Ellis, OSA, Alumni Medallion, honoring alumni who have distinguished themselves in their professions and in service to their communities and the University.

“Father Ellis’ legacy at Villanova is immeasurable,” says University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS. “He was an Augustinian priest of deep conviction, a scholar of remarkable breadth and a mentor whose wisdom and kindness touched generations of students, faculty and colleagues. His life was a testament to the Augustinian values of truth, unity and love, and we are grateful for his enduring impact on the Villanova community.”

Delany was recruited to Villanova by renowned Track and Field Coach James “Jumbo” Elliott in 1954, beginning the “Irish Pipeline” of runners that endures to this day and has included several more Olympians. He was the seventh runner in history to break the four-minute mark in the mile.

One of the leaders of a dominant era of Villanova Track and Field, Delany was a four-time NCAA champion in the mile, and he was part of multiple winning teams at the Penn Relays, the world’s oldest and largest track and field meet.
