While
writing your personal statement is usually the most challenging part of your application,
it presents you with an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other candidates.
It gives the selection committee a glimpse of your thoughts, priorities, dreams,
fears, and inner voice that a transcript just can't convey. For that reason, you
have to make your personal statement exactly what the name implies: personal. Your
personal statement should not be your resume in paragraph form; it should be a compelling
and intriguing invitation for a selection committee to get to know you better.
Before you start writing, do some thinking. Who you are and and who you want
to be? Where have you been and where you are going? Why and how do you want to get
there? This is naturally going to involve thinking about your academic and career
experiences. While you shouldn't shy away from them, you do want to place them in
the broader context of you as a person. It's wonderful if you can articulate your
goals to study medieval literature at Princeton with Dr. X; it's more wonderful
if you can articulate which particular aspects of your personality and life experience
draw you to medieval literature, Princeton, or Dr. X. Some intriguing prompts for
this kind of thinking include the
Willamette University website and the
Proust Questionnaire.
If you keep a journal, you might want to review it to glean some insights and ideas.
If you don't keep a journal, consider starting one.
Villanova's Center for Undergraduate Research and
Fellowships
owns a small library of writing handbooks, style guides, and other tools to help
you refine your personal statements, policy proposals, and essays. We also maintains
scholarship-specific files of essay tips, as well as model applications from recent
students who were awarded scholarships. Please feel free to stop by and browse!
Give yourself plenty of time to write. No matter how well it may work for you
in some of your classes, a personal statement is not something to dash off a few
days before deadline. As Ernest Hemingway famously noted, "The first draft of anything
is **%#." Assuming this is true, you probably do not want to hand a selection committee
your first draft. You shouldn't even hand them a second or third draft for that
matter. The longer you let yourself write and revise, the more compelling and revealing
your personal statement will become. Write early and often.
That said, don't be hard on yourself as you first set down to write. Even Hemmingway
didn't get it perfect the first time around. Since it's only your first draft, you
don't need to worry about making mistakes, sounding stupid, or even spelling correctly.
Let your thoughts roam and shut that imposing childhood grammar teacher's voice
out of your head for the moment. Just write.
Once you've got your ideas down on paper, run it by some trusted readers. Professors
(particularly those who are writing your recommendation letters), advisors, and
Jane Morris are all excellent resources. Try to solicit feedback about the ideas,
structure, and coherency of your essay rather than simple proofreading. Having other
people rewrite and rethink for you is not the idea; having other people ask you
questions that push you to think more broadly is. If you're going to do this, however,
be ready act upon such questioning and thinking. At this stage in the game revising
often means more than inserting commas and adding a paragraph here and there; it
sometimes means rethinking and revising an entire essay. You may have to give your
personal statement a complete overhaul because you suddenly discover a better structure,
focal point, or slant. This is normal. Do not despair.
As your thoughts become more and more polished, your writing should too. Check
out a writing manual for guidance. Strunk and White's eminently readable
The Elements of Style
is an excellent (and concise) starting point. Kurt Vonnegut's short essay
"How to Write with Style"
frankly and humorously speaks to what he sees as the essential components of good
writing. Call that imposing childhood grammar teacher if you need help with the
mechanics of your essay, or find a friend with a particularly good grasp of the
English language. However you accomplish it, your final draft must be free of grammatical
and spelling errors, and should be as compelling and insightful as you can make
it. It sounds like a tall order, but you are more than capable of doing it. Give
yourself plenty of time, plenty of reflection, plenty of revisions, and plenty of
help from trusted advisors, and your personal essay will do its job: present an
intriguing glimpse into your mind and person.
Happy writing!
Other Sources The following links provide further guidelines for brainstorming, drafting, revising,
and completing a magnificent personal statement. Also be sure to check out the website
of the individual scholarships to which you apply; many have tips more specific
to their competitions.
Mary Hale Tolar
Deputy Executive Secretary, Truman Scholarship Foundation
Mary Tolar is a 1988 Truman Scholar and 1990 Rhodes
Scholar; served as scholarships advisor at four institutions, and has served
on national selection committees for Truman and Rhodes Scholarships. She has
helped over sixty students win national scholarships.
If you are applying for nationally competitive scholarships, for graduate
school, or for a number of post-graduate service or employment opportunities,
you have seen the vaguely phrased request; in one form or another, it comes
down to "tell us something about yourself."
The Rhodes and Marshall competitions require a 1000-word personal essay:
the Fulbright, a "curriculum vita." You are asked to share your "academic and
other interests." A clearer charge might be: compose an essay that reveals who
you are, what you care about, and what you intend to do in this life. Tell this
story in a compelling manner, and do so in less than a thousand words. What's
so hard about that? Simply make sense of your life (right.) But what does that
mean? What will it look like?
Because personal statements are personal, there is no one type or style of
writing that is set out as a model. That can be liberating; it can also be maddening.
But while every personal statement is unique in style, its purpose is the same.
A personal statement is your introduction to a selection committee. It determines
whether you are invited to interview; and if selected as a finalist, interview
questions will be based on this material. It is the heart of your application.
A personal statement is:
A picture. Your personal essay should produce a picture of you
as a person, a student, a potential scholarship winner, and (looking into
the future) a former scholarship recipient.
An invitation. The reader must be invited to get to know you,
personally. Bridge the assumed distance of strangers. Make your reader welcome.
An indication of your priorities and judgment. What you choose
to say in your statement tells the committee what your priorities are. What
you say, and how you say it, is crucial.
A story, or more precisely, your story. Everyone has a story
to tell, but we are not all natural storytellers. If you are like most people,
your life lacks inherent drama. This is when serious self-reflection, conversation
with friends, family, and mentors, and permission to be creative come in
handy.
A personal statement is not:
An academic paper with you as the subject. The papers you write
for class are typically designed to interpret data, reflect research, analyze
events or readings--all at some distance. We are taught to eliminate the
"I" from our academic writing. In a personal statement your goal is to close
the distance between you and the reader. You must engage on a different,
more personal level than you have been trained to in college.
A resume in narrative form. An essay that reads like a resume
of accomplishments and goals tells the reader nothing that they could not
glean from the rest of the application. It reveals little about the candidate,
and is a wasted opportunity.
A journal entry. While you may well draw on experiences or observations
captured in your personal journal, your essay should not read like a diary.
Share what is relevant, using these experiences to give a helpful context
for your story. And include only what you are comfortable sharing--be prepared
to discuss at an interview what you include.
A plea or justification for the scholarship. This is not an invitation
to "make your case." Defending an assertion that you are more deserving
of the scholarship than other candidates is a wasted effort-you've likely
just accomplished the opposite.
Most importantly, a personal statement is authentic. Don't make the mistake
of trying to guess what the committee is looking for, and don't write what you
think they want to hear. They want to know you.
So, what must you include in the personal statement? An effective personal
statement will answer the following questions:
Who am I?
Who do I want to be?
What kind of contribution do I want to make, and how?
Why does it make sense for me to study at Oxford (or York, LSE, Cambridge,
Sussex)?
For the Rhodes, you will want to include a proposal of study, one or two
paragraphs devoted to why Oxford makes sense for you. (For the Marshall and
Fulbright, your "proposed academic programme" is presented separately.) Why
is this the right place and program? Is it consistent with your studies and
activities to date? Draw connections.
Remember the goal: grab the readers' interest, and make them want to meet
you for an interview. Get a sense of the experiences and dreams you wish to
share, then examine them for a helpful means of making sense of it all. You
will find your story; and if you share it honestly, you will have written a
personal statement.
Finally, know that writing a personal essay is hard and will take many drafts
and much reflection. Don't wait until you have it right to share it with others;
their input will likely make it stronger, clearer, and tighter. Don't put it
off until you have it right . . . just write!

Newspaper reporters and technical writers are trained to reveal almost nothing
about themselves in their writings. This makes them freaks in the world of writers,
since almost all of the other ink-stained wretches in that world reveal a lot
about themselves to readers. We call these revelations, accidental and intentional,
elements of style.
These revelations tell us as readers what sort of person
it is with whom we are spending time. Does the writer sound ignorant or informed,
stupid or bright, crooked or honest, humorless or playful--? And on and on.
Why should you examine your writing style with the idea of improving it? Do
so as a mark of respect for your readers, whatever you’re writing. If you scribble
your thoughts any which way, your readers will surely feel that you care nothing
about them. They will mark you down as an egomaniac or a chowderhead--or worse,
they will stop reading you.
The most damning revelation you can make about yourself
is that you do not know what is interesting and what is not. Don’t you yourself
like or dislike writers mainly for what they choose to show you or make you
think about? Did you ever admire an empty-headed writer for his or her mastery
of the language? No. So your own winning style must begin with ideas in your
head.
Find a subject you care about. Find a subject you care about and which
you in your heart feel others should care about. It is this genuine caring,
and not your games with language, which will be the most compelling and seductive
element in your style.
I am not urging you to write a novel, by the way--although
I would not be sorry if you wrote one, provided you genuinely cared about something.
A petition to the mayor about a pothole in front of your house or a love letter
to the girl next door will do.
Do not ramble, though. I won’t ramble on about
that.
Keep it simple. As for your use of language: Remember that two great masters
of language, William Shakespeare and James Joyce, wrote sentences which were
almost childlike when their subjects were most profound.
"Should I act upon
the urgings that I feel, or remain passive and thus cease to exist?"
"To be
or not to be?"
“To be or not to be?” asks Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The longest
word is three letters long. Joyce, when he was frisky, could put together a
sentence as intricate as a necklace for Cleopatra, but my favorite sentence
in his short story “Eveline” is this one: “She was tired.” At that point in
the story, no other words could break the heart of a reader as those three words
do.
Simplicity of language is not only reputable, but perhaps even sacred. The
Bible opens with a sentence well within the writing skills of a lively fourteen-year-old:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Have the guts to cut. It may be that you, too, are capable of making necklaces for Cleopatra, so to
speak. But your eloquence should be the servant of the ideas in your head. Your
rule might be this: If a sentence, no matter how excellent, does not illuminate
your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out.
Sound like yourself. The writing style which is most natural to you is bound to echo the speech you
heard when a child. English was the novelist Joseph Conrad’s third language,
and much that seems piquant in his use of English was no doubt colored by his
first language, which was Polish. And lucky indeed is the writer who has grown
up in Ireland, for the English spoken there is so amusing and musical. I myself
grew up in Indianapolis, where common speech sounds like a band saw cutting
galvanized tin, and employs a vocabulary as unornamental as a monkey wrench.
In some of the more remote hollows of Appalachia, children still grow up hearing
songs and locutions of Elizabethan times. Yes, and many Americans grow up hearing
a language other than English, or an English dialect a majority of Americans
cannot understand.
All these varieties of speech are beautiful, just as the
varieties of butterflies are beautiful. No matter what your first language,
you should treasure it all your life. If it happens not to be standard English,
and if it shows itself when you write standard English, the result is usually
delightful, like a very pretty girl with one eye that is green and one that
is blue.
I myself find that I trust my own writing most, and others seem to
trust it most, too, when I sound most like a person from Indianapolis, which
is what I am. What alternatives do I have? The one most vehemently recommended
by teachers has no doubt been pressed on you, as well: to write like cultivated
Englishmen of a century or more ago.
Say what you mean to say. I used to be
exasperated by such teachers, but I am no more. I understand now that all those
antique essays and stories with which I was to compare my own work were not
magnificent for their datedness or foreignness, but for saying precisely what
their authors meant them to say. My teachers wished me to write accurately,
always selecting the most effective words, and relating the words to one another
unambiguously, rigidly, like parts of a machine. The teachers did not want to
turn me into an Englishman after all. They hoped that I would become understandable--and
therefore understood.
And there went my dream of doing with words what Pablo
Picasso did with paint or what any number of jazz idols did with music. If I
broke all the rules of punctuation, had words mean whatever I wanted them to
mean, and strung them together higgledy-piggledy, I would simply not be understood.
So you, too, had better avoid Picasso-style or jazz-style writing, if you have
something worth saying and wish to be understood.
Readers want our pages to
look very much like pages they have seen before. Why? This is because they themselves
have a tough job to do, and they need all the help they can get from us.
Pity
the readers. They have to identify thousands of little marks on paper, and make
sense of them immediately. They have to read, an art so difficult that most
people don’t really master it even after having studied it all through grade
school and high school--twelve long years.
So this discussion must finally acknowledge
that our stylistic options as writers are neither numerous nor glamorous, since
our readers are bound to be such imperfect artists. Our audience requires us
to be sympathetic and patient teachers, ever willing to simplify and clarify--whereas
we would rather soar high above the crowd, singing like nightingales.
That is
the bad news. The good news is that we Americans are governed under a unique
Constitution, which allows us to write whatever we please without fear of punishment.
So the most meaningful aspect of our styles, which is what we choose to write
about, is utterly unlimited.
Really detailed advice. For a discussion of
literary style in a narrower sense, I commend to your attention The Elements
of Style, by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White (Macmillan, 1979). E.B. White
is, of course, one of the most admirable literary stylists this country has
so far produced. You should realize, too, that no one would care how well or
how badly Mr. White expressed himself, if he did not have perfectly enchanting
things to say
PRIOR TO CAREER FAIR Plan to wear a professional outfit - first impressions are critical and
lasting
Do not wear jeans, t-shirts, wrinkled clothes, sneakers, hats, mini
skirts, active wear, tank/halter/sleeveless tops, low cut or tight fitting
shirts.
Women - wear a suit, pants suit, blazer with skirt or dress,
conservative color, no heavy jewelry or perfume.
Men - wear a suit or a jacket & tie with slacks, conservative color, no
heavy cologne or after-shave.
Prepare plenty of copies of your resume - more than you think you'll
need
Have an attractive resume on good quality paper, using bold,
underline, and bullets; we strongly suggest white or other neutral-color
paper.
Check carefully for typos, spelling and grammar errors.
Have it critiqued at Career Services.
Keep the copies in a folder or portfolio at the event.
Some employers may also ask you to submit your resume through their
company website for their specific type of applicant tracking system.
This is a growing trend due to a requirement that employers who maintain
contracts with the federal government that are over a certain dollar
amount must report detailed recruitment. This data is most easily
collected through employers' online applicant tracking system.
Familiarize yourself with the employers
Decide which employers you want to speak with and prioritize them.
Research, research, research - a list of participating employers is
available on our website two weeks prior to each event.
Visit the employers websites
Market yourself
Develop an introduction to use when meeting employers at career days
and other networking events.
AT THE CAREER FAIR Come early in the day - employers are at their peak and there is less
competition
Bring a pen, folder or portfolio for your resumes, and perhaps a pad
of paper.
Carry as little as possible (no coats or backpacks, etc.)
Turn off cell phones in the employer areas.
Approach employer representatives with confidence
Introduce yourself, make good eye contact, and offer a firm
handshake.
Give the recruiter your resume and tell him/her about yourself and
your career interests.
Ask questions about job openings/descriptions, the organization,
application procedures, etc.
Collect business cards and employer literature.
Speak with as many employers as possible
Visit your top choices first. Avoid standing in a long line to speak
with one recruiter when you could talk with 3 or 4 others in the same
time period.
AFTER THE CAREER FAIR Send a thank you letter or email message
Thank employers for their time at the career day. Restate your
interest to those employers in which you are particularly interested.
Include a copy of your resume. Since most candidates will not follow
up with employers after the career day, this will make you stand out.
