The Norwegian Red Cross is deeply engaged in the oversight and improvement of correctional facilities. Through its Visitor Service, it provides societal contact for incarcerated people while also facilitating on-the-ground observation of what happens in the typically closed world of prisons. Through its Network After Imprisonment, it offers social networking, housing aid, work training and community support to help formerly incarcerated individuals transition smoothly back into society.
Stian Estenstad leads both the Visitor Service and the Network After Imprisonment, which he created in 2004 after serving as a prison officer in the Norwegian Correctional Service. In recognition of his decades of service and advocacy, Estenstad was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in 2025.
