The Eleanor H. McCullen Center for Law, Religion and Public Policy welcomes George Weigel, distinguished senior fellow for the Ethics and Public Policy Center's (EPPC) Catholic Studies Program.
A Catholic theologian and New York Times bestselling author, he is widely recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on the Catholic Church and one of America's leading public intellectuals. He served as president of the EPPC from 1989 to 1996.
Weigel is perhaps best known for his widely translated and internationally acclaimed John Paul II trilogy: a two-volume biography, “Witness to Hope,” its sequel, “The End and the Beginning” and a memoir, “Lessons in Hope: My Unexpected Life With St. John Paul II.”
Weigel has authored or edited more than 30 other books, many of which have been translated into other languages. For a list of his publications, visit the EPPC website.
Weigel's essays, op-ed columns and reviews appear in major opinion journals and newspapers across the United States. A frequent guest on television, radio and podcasts, he is also a senior Vatican analyst for NBC News. His weekly column, "The Catholic Difference," is syndicated to 91 newspapers and magazines in five countries.
Weigel received a BA in philosophy from St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore and an MA in theology from the University of St. Michael's College in Toronto. He has also received 19 honorary doctorates. In 2024, he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. He has also been awarded the Papal Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, the Lithuanian Diplomacy Star and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal of Poland's Ministry of Culture.
