Villanova Law Alumni Honored by Judge Advocates Association

July 28, 2026 – Earlier this spring, two Villanova Law alumni were honored at the annual Judge Advocates Association and Judge Advocates Foundation Awards Dinner in Arlington, Va. Colonel Elizabeth Hernandez ’04 received the Major General William K. Suter Distinguished Judicial Service Award, and Captain Andrew Moore ’16 received the Outstanding Defense Appellate Advocacy Award for the Army. 

Col. Hernandez currently holds the position of chief trial judge of the Air Force. Over the course of her career, she has held many positions in the military justice system, from serving as a prosecutor, defense counsel and now a trial judge. The award recognizes her military and judicial accomplishments, integrity and community service. 

Capt. Moore's career began in real estate law before moving to the Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, where he is now an appellate defense lawyer. This annual award recognizes one active-duty Army judge advocate who has demonstrated exceptional performance and distinguished advocacy skills while representing soldiers before appellate courts each year. 

While in law school, both Hernandez and Moore participated in the Villanova Sentencing Workshop, taught by Steven Chanenson, professor of law and faculty director of the David F. and Constance B. Girard-diCarlo Center for Ethics, Integrity and Compliance. Professor Chanenson also attended the ceremony.

“Receiving this is a milestone I never anticipated when I graduated from Villanova Law,” said Col. Hernandez. “It serves as a reminder that the values instilled at Villanova continue to shape my approach to leadership and service every day. I am profoundly grateful to Villanova for providing the foundation upon which my career has been built, and I remain proud to represent the Villanova community in service to our nation.”
