Thursday, May 8, 2025, will forever stand as a historic day—for Villanova University and for the Catholic Church. On that day, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, OSA, ’77 CLAS, was elected the 267th pope. Now known to the world as Pope Leo XIV, he is not only the first pope from the United States, but also a fellow Augustinian and Villanovan.
The journey of Robert Prevost—from a student in our classrooms to the papacy—is a powerful testament to the enduring impact of an Augustinian Catholic education rooted in Veritas, Unitas, Caritas (truth, unity and love). At Villanova, we often speak about preparing students to lead with purpose and create meaningful change in the world. Pope Leo XIV’s story reflects the very spirit of transformation that defines our University.
The sense of pride and excitement felt across campus on May 8—and shared by Villanovans around the globe—was profound. That energy continues to resonate, alongside the thoughtful reflection and dialogue inspired by this historic moment.
Across the University, our institutes, centers, programs and scholars are contributing meaningfully to conversations about Pope Leo XIV, the papacy and the future of the Catholic Church. On this page, you will find news and stories connecting Villanova and Pope Leo XIV, insights from our faculty experts, and opportunities to engage through upcoming events and programs.
