GRADING AND ASSESSMENT - GRADUATE

Graduate and Doctoral Grading System

Presented below is the Graduate and Doctoral Grading System. Note: The CWSL has its own grading system as outlined in its Student Handbook.

The grade report at the end of the semester is part of the student's permanent record. Any inaccuracy on this record must be reported to the Registrar as noted on the respective College/School Academic Calendar; otherwise, the record will stand as it is.

Faculty members are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the evaluation and grading system.  Presented below is the University Graduate and Doctoral Grading System.

  • A            Outstanding

  • A –

  • B+

  • B            Good

  • B –

  • C+

  •  C           Fair

  •  F           Failure

  • N           Incomplete

  • NF         Incomplete Failure  (Note: The N grade automatically converts to an NF grade if the work is not completed and submitted to the instructor per the dates listed on the Graduate Academic Calendars).

  • NG: (or Blank); no grade reported. The NG is reserved for use when a student has “walked away” from a course and by the Registrar’s Office when no grade is given. Does appear in grade drop-down menu. Should not be used for incomplete work. NG grades will also automatically convert to an NF if unresolved by the change of grade deadline.

  • WX        Approved Withdrawal Without Penalty
    • The WX grade is issued when a student withdraws within the published timeframe and college approval has been given.
    • The WX grade indicates an approved withdrawal from the course without academic penalty and is not calculated in the cumulative GPA.

After the deadline indicated in the respective College/School Academic Calendar, only non-academic reasons (such as severe illness or serious employment-related difficulties), supported by documentation, will be considered sufficient to receive a WX grade; no WX grades will be approved for academic reasons after the deadline

  • W           Approved Withdrawal With Academic Penalty
  • S            Satisfactory
  • T            Transfer Grade
  • U            Unsatisfactory
  • AU         Audit
  • IP           In Progress

The IP grade is reserved for thesis and dissertation courses and should never be used for incomplete coursework.

Notes:

  • The N grade indicates that the instructor has agreed to give the student an extension for completion of course assignments.
  • When the work is submitted and graded, the professor will submit a change of grade request through the grade change workflow.
  • Deadlines associated with N grades are found on the respective College/School Academic Calendar.
  • Requests for additional time to complete course requirements beyond the N grade deadline must be submitted according to College/School protocols.
  • All grade changes require the approval and sign-off of the department chair and dean or their designees.
  • The grade of WX indicates an authorized withdrawal with the grade not considered in the calculation of the quality-point average.
  • The grade W also indicates an authorized withdrawal, but the grade is calculated as an F in determining the quality-point average.
  •  Authorization for WX and W may be given only by the student's dean and are not valid grade options for faculty to use.

Students should also reference the individual College/School Graduate Academic Catalog for additional program-specific information.

Grades are recorded at the end of each term and are available to students through MyNova as soon as they are posted by the faculty. Students who require a printed grade report can print an unofficial transcript through MyNova or request an official transcript via the National Student Clearinghouse.

UG and G previously combined; Graduate separated out 5/1/2026.
