PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

The MLK Day of Service's off-campus component began when several Black students were inspired to give back to their respective communities in Philadelphia. Over more than 15 years, it has grown into a service initiative that partners with multiple locations in the Greater Philadelphia area. Recently, up to 32 community locations have been served.

Beautifying a community hall or church, serving food or participating in a community activity to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy are just a few examples of activities that have taken place at off-campus locations. Working with groups that have similar missions allows volunteers the opportunity to participate in meaningful service while strengthening relationships.

The MLK Day of Service Committee actively works to plan and coordinate activities associated with the MLK Day of Service. Committee members must:

• Attend the MLK Day of Service;
• Participate in bi-weekly general committee meetings;
• Meet with sub-committee members to accomplish goals;
• Fulfill additional responsibilities associated with each position.

President 

• Oversee the MLK Day of Services committee, and with staff support, oversee the needs of the event. 
• Communicate with the University President or other dignitaries to ensure their presence at the send-off.

Vice President 

• The Vice President works with the committee on logistics and operations while ensuring the MLK Day of Service runs smoothly.

Administrative Chair 

• Prep and update the master calendar with tasks for the committee.
• Maintain the Teams channel and updates notes
• Collaborate with Dining Services to arrange food and beverages for volunteers. 

Service Sites 

• Identify and communicate with off-campus service sites, using existing partnerships or STOV-provided lists. 
• Acts as the primary on campus site contact for service sites and assists with registration on the day of 

Marketing & Outreach 

• Create engaging content to promote interest in participating in MLK Day of Service 
• Work to get information about MLK Day of Service distributed the Orientation Program and collaborate to promote information alongside St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service 
• Design and produce merchandise, including Committee merchandise 
• Visit ACS and Communitas classes to promote registration during the Fall semester 
• This committee also activates applications for volunteer and leader registration and serves as a point of contact for questions about the registration process. 

Transportation  

• Work with Service Sites to determine site numbers and transportation needs for each site 
• Coordinate and organize the number of buses and which sites they will each be going to 

Supplies 

• Create the supply form that sites will fill out for their day of needs 
• Assist professional staff with the supply order 
• Assist in leading inventory leading up to the day of
